Matcha: A Health Miracle!

Customarily consumed in East Asia, matcha is a finely grounded powder of green tea leaves made from the Camellia Sinensis plant. Compared to other types of tea, matcha tea has a different harvesting process as they are grown in the shade (typically under a cloth) to prevent direct sunlight, which slows down the growth of the tea plant. The lack of sunlight increases the chlorophyll levels of the tea leaves turning them into a darker shade of green.

The tea plant is kept like this for about three to four weeks before they are ready to be harvested. Then the best tea buds are hand-picked. The stems and veins of the tea plant are removed to begin its grinding process which takes up to an hour of smooth grinding for 30 grams of matcha! The end result will be a fine talc-like powder that is commonly known as matcha.

The Benefits of Consuming Matcha Tea Daily

Good Source of Antioxidants

Catechin, a natural antioxidant found a lot in tea and other plants like cocoa or berries, helps with cell and molecule damage and also reduces the development of free radicals. Research shows matcha is very rich in catechins comparative to other tea types because the whole leaf is used in the manufacturing process. The powder added to hot water or milk contains the nutrients of the whole tea leaf, which helps boost the antioxidant activity of the body.

Calmness Gained from Consumption

Matcha was first introduced to Japan over a thousand years ago, to assist with meditation. Monks would consume matcha while meditating to be in an alert yet calming mood. L-Theanine is a rare amino acid known for its ability to improve a person’s state of relaxation and well-being. This amino acid creates alpha waves that help the body to calm and relax. While L-Theanine can be found in all types of tea, matcha contains about five times more than black tea and green tea!

Smooth Stomach Movements

Does matcha make things happen in your stomach? Well, yes it does help. L-Theanine with the help of caffeine accelerates the metabolism of the body, aiding the bowels to move in the correct direction. Consumption of matcha is a good solution for people with digestion problems.

Helps with Inflammation

Epigallocatechin gallate commonly known as EGCG is a polyphenol abundant in matcha, getting a lot of attention for the benefits they provide to our health. EGCG is known to have anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce oxidative stress, a common inflammatory factor.  This polyphenol also helps increase the production of natural chemicals in our body that can reduce inflammation.
